Insulin Receptor Substrate 1 Expression-Growth Factor Receptors-Cancer Pathogenesis

Insulin receptor substrate 1 expression enhances the sensitivity of 32D cells to chemotherapy-induced cell death.

Authors: Porter HA, Carey GB, Keegan AD Abstract The adapters IRS1 and IRS2 link growth factor receptors to downstream signaling pathways that regulate proliferation and survival. Both suppress factor-withdrawal-induced apoptosis and have been implicated in cancer progression. However, recent studies suggest IRS1 and IRS2 mediate differential functions in cancer pathogenesis. IRS1 promoted breast cancer proliferation, while IRS2 promoted metastasis. The role of IRS1 and IRS2 in controlling cell responses to chemotherapy is unknown. To determine the role of IRS1 and IRS2 in the sensitivity of cells to chemotherapy, we treated 32D cells lacking or expressing IRS proteins with various concentrations of chemotherapeutic agents. We found that expression of IRS1, in contrast to IRS2, enh...MedWorm Sponsor Message: Have a look at The Breast Cancer Daily, the new breast cancer portal with all the latest breast cancer news and research powered by MedWorm, updated daily. read more..

Genes Linked To Chemotherapy Resistance In Breast Cancer

A study led by Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center (VICC) investigators has identified a gene expression pattern that may explain why chemotherapy prior to surgery isn't effective against some tumors and suggests new therapy options for patients with specific subtypes of breast cancer. The study by lead author Justin Balko, Pharm.D., Ph.D... read more..

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy-Urinary Incontinence-Distressing Symptoms-Menopausal Symptoms

Non-drug treatments help alleviate symptoms of treatment-induced menopause in breast cancer patients

(ECCO-the European CanCer Organisation) Researchers from the Netherlands have found that the menopausal symptoms caused by giving chemotherapy or hormonal therapy to younger women with breast cancer can be ameliorated considerably through the use of cognitive behavioral therapy and physical exercise. These interventions can be effective in dealing with such distressing symptoms as hot flushes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, weight gain, urinary incontinence and sexual problems, the researchers say.
